What is visagism, and what it changes in makeup

Visagism is reading a face before applying anything to it: proportions, angles, the distance between features, the way light falls. That reading decides where each product goes and, more importantly, where nothing goes.

Warm-toned makeup with a soft eye and glowing skin, from a visagism reading

When someone asks me what visagism is, the shortest answer I have is this: it is the part of the work that happens before I open my kit. It is behind everything I do as a makeup artist in Porto.

The question often comes after a client reads the word on my profile and cannot tell whether it is a technique, a qualification or a trend. It is a reading. And it is why two people with the same skin colour can leave my chair with makeup that looks nothing alike.

The short answer

Visagism is the study of a face's proportions and of how light behaves on them. Applied to makeup, it means deciding what to do from that specific face, rather than applying a scheme that is repeated on everyone.

The word comes from the French visage, face. It is not an application technique. It is the decision that comes before the technique.

What gets read, in practice

The reading is done with the person sitting down, with no product on, and takes a few minutes. I look at four things.

Distances. The distance between the eyes changes everything in how the eye is drawn. Close-set eyes need the dark kept away from the inner corner; wide-set eyes need the opposite. The same smoky eye in both cases looks right on one face and odd on the other.

Angles. A strong jaw and a round chin react differently to the same shadow. What softens one hardens the other.

The volumes already there. Someone with high cheekbones does not need me to draw cheekbones. She needs me not to erase them with too much foundation.

The light of the place. It is not a feature of the face, but it goes into the same sum. A church in the late afternoon and a dinner under warm light do not ask for the same intensity.

The same face at another time, with another reading. The closed smoky eye darkens the gaze and pulls all the weight upwards.

The photograph above and the one at the top of the page are of the same person. The shape of the eye changed, where the dark sits changed, and the amount of product changed. The face is the same.

What changes compared with makeup done without a reading

The difference is rarely in the product. It is in the order of decisions.

Without a reading, the usual route is to start with foundation, cover everything evenly, then correct whatever ended up heavy. With a reading, you decide first where coverage is needed and where the skin stays visible, and there is nothing to correct halfway because there was no excess.

There is a simple sign that tells the two results apart. If the makeup makes you look like someone else, there was no reading. If it makes you look like yourself on a better day, there was.

Deep skin with bright yellow and green eyeshadow, glowing skin and gold jewellery
Colour does not have to be quiet. The reading decides where it sits and how much skin stays visible.

Where it shows most

It shows in everything, but it pays off most when the result has to last and be photographed. At a wedding, makeup goes through four different light temperatures in one day and has to last fourteen hours. A wrong decision at the start multiplies.

That is why the bridal makeup trial exists. The reading is done calmly, weeks before, and on the day something already decided is repeated.

What visagism is not

It does not change the structure of the face. It works with light and shadow on what is already there, and it comes off with the makeup at the end of the day. Anyone who promises to change the shape of a nose with product is promising something the first photograph will contradict.

Nor is it a chart of face shapes. Dividing faces into oval, round, square and triangular, and giving each one its recipe, is the opposite of what I am describing: just another repeated scheme, with more categories.

And it is not a separate service. You do not book visagism. You book makeup, and the reading is part of it.

What to bring to the chair

Three things help the reading, and none of them is required.

Photos of makeup you do not like. This is the most useful of all. Knowing what someone rejects sets the limits far faster than a list of inspirations.

The accessories for the day, if you have chosen them. Gold and silver ask for different undertones on the skin, and that decision is easier with the piece in hand.

The light: where it will be, at what time, indoors or outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

What is visagism?

Visagism is reading the face before makeup: proportions, angles, the distances between features and the way light falls on them. That reading decides where each product goes and, above all, where nothing goes.

What is the difference between visagism and ordinary makeup?

Makeup applies a technique. Visagism decides which technique makes sense on that face before applying it. In practice, it is the difference between repeating the same smoky eye on everyone and drawing the eye from the real distance between the eyes.

Does visagism take longer?

The reading itself takes a few minutes and is done with the person in front of the mirror, before any product is opened. What changes is not the total time but the order: decide first, apply after, instead of correcting halfway.

Is visagism only for brides?

No. It makes a difference in any service, but it shows most when the result has to last for hours and be photographed. That is why the reading pays off most at a wedding.

Do I need to bring reference photos?

They help, especially the ones you do not like. Knowing what a person rejects tells me faster where the limits are than a list of what she admires.

Does visagism change the shape of the face?

No. It works with light and shadow on what is already there, and the effect goes when the makeup comes off. Anyone promising to change the structure of a face with product is promising what they cannot deliver.

One last thing

If you are choosing who will do your makeup and want one useful question for your first message, ask this: what will you look at in my face before you start? The answer tells you more than any portfolio. It is how I start every bridal makeup, and why I work as a makeup artist and visagiste.

Shall we talk about your day?

Tell me the date and what you have in mind. I usually reply the same day, with no obligation.
