The question nearly always comes the same way: do you do workshops? I do, but the word covers very different things, and it is worth knowing which one you are after before booking. Workshops are part of the makeup course in Porto I teach at the studio, in two formats.
Some people want to learn to do their own makeup, without depending on anyone for a dinner or a wedding. Some want to start working as makeup artists. And some already work in makeup, with clients, and want to add a service. There is room for all of them, just not in the same format.
Two formats: private lesson or masterclass
The private lesson is the main format. It is one student and me, at the studio, and we agree the date between us. There is no fixed calendar, because each lesson is built around the person taking it. That also means it can be fitted around a stay in Porto.
The masterclass works the other way round. I organise it, as a group, and the dates go out on Instagram and TikTok. I do a full makeup on a model and explain each step as I go. Those watching can ask questions, come closer and take photos.
What you learn in each
In a self-makeup lesson, the face being studied is yours. We look at your proportions, decide where light and shadow go, and practise two or three routines you can repeat on your own at home: a quick one for the day and one for the evening. We also talk through products: often the problem is not technique but a product that does not suit your skin.
In professional training, the path goes from the first brush to the first client. Colour and undertone theory, skin preparation by skin type, layered foundation, correction, eyes, visagism and long-wear bridal makeup. Then comes the part almost nobody teaches: kit hygiene, how to price work so it makes a profit, and how to talk to a client.
For those already working in the field there is a brow and lash module: brow up, lash lift and threading in the Brazilian method, with the full protocol, processing times and contraindications.
A masterclass always has a theme. It can be a bridal look, an evening eye or an eyeliner technique. What you take away is the whole construction of a look on a real face, from the first product to the last.
How a private lesson works
I demonstrate first, beside the chair. Then it is your turn, and my hand corrects yours while you work. It is the only way I know to correct a movement at the moment it happens, and it is why these lessons are always one-to-one.
All the materials used in the lesson are mine: brushes, foundations, shadows, whatever is needed. You do not have to buy anything before you come.
You take two things home. A booklet summarising what we worked on, made for you, to go back to when memory fails. And a certificate. Through the day there is coffee and something to snack on between exercises.
Lessons are in Portuguese or English.
How a masterclass works
In a masterclass there is no hand correction; there is demonstration. The model sits in front of the group, under studio light, and I do the makeup from start to finish, explaining why I choose each product and where it goes.
What you gain is seeing the order of decisions live, on a real face, without the cuts of a video. When the makeup is finished, the students come closer and photograph the result.
Which to choose
If you want to work in makeup, start with a private lesson. In a masterclass you see a lot, but the hand only learns when someone corrects it, and that cannot be done for a whole group at once.
If you already do makeup and want to see how someone else builds a look, a masterclass is a good choice. It also shows you what is possible before you invest in full training.
If the goal is doing your own makeup, a self-makeup lesson gets you there faster than any group course. Everything you practise is done on your face, with your features.
How to book
For a private lesson, send me a message with the format you are interested in and when you are available. I reply with possible dates, what is included and the price.
For masterclasses, follow Lari Wendler Beauty on Instagram and TikTok, where each date is announced. Lessons and masterclasses take place at the studio in Vila Nova de Gaia, in Greater Porto.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a private lesson and a masterclass?
A private lesson is for one student, on a date agreed between us, and I correct the hand of the person learning while she works. A masterclass is a group session: I do a full makeup on a model and explain each step to those watching.
Do I need experience to take a makeup workshop?
No. Self-makeup and professional training both start from zero. The brow and lash module is the only one designed for people already working in the field.
Are materials included?
Yes, in every lesson: all the materials used are mine, and you do not need to bring or buy anything before coming.
Do I get a certificate at the end?
Yes. At the end of a private lesson you receive a certificate and a booklet summarising what we worked on, made for you.
Are the lessons in English?
Yes. Lessons are in Portuguese or English. Say which you prefer in your first message.
Where are the lessons held?
At my studio in Vila Nova de Gaia, in Greater Porto, at Travessa Conde Silva Monteiro 33.
One last thing
If you are unsure whether to learn online or in person, the short answer is this: to work on other people's faces, nothing replaces a hand corrected in real time. Everything else can be learned at your own pace.
